To interpret through the painting medium of oils on canvas, the loving mother
Paula was, the strength of character she was known to have had, was an enormous
challenge for me.
I tried to convey the closeness of mother and child by interlocking the curves
of Paula’s arm with the overlapping arm of baby Anna, melting the colours of
both mother and child into one mass.
Paula’s and Anna’s hands speak volumes. Paula holds on tightly to her treasure.
My painting method of broad and sure brush strokes helps to establish strong
3-dimensional forms, which translates well in expressing Paula’s strength of
character, which I learned and which I felt she had.
I also learned that Paula had a symbolic connection to water, which I gesturally
depicted – the ocean behind Paula and Anna.
It is my hope that this painting of Paula and her baby will play a timely roll –
keeping the memory of Paula alive, always.....
Thinking of all who loved her, this evening, December 6/2006.
